Airline travellers make the connection to CNN
CNN Mobile today reports the results of the first year of its project at Munich Airport to encourage travellers to subscribe to their new Mobile service CNN Mobile.
Since August 2008, CNN have used Hypertag Proximity Marketing (Bluetooth Marketing) technology to allow travellers waiting for their planes to download a link to the latest news and analysis via CNN directly to their mobile for free. The project began in the Autumn as a way to help travellers keep abreast of the developments on the US election, as Barack Obama paved his way to Presidency, as they waited to board their flights.
Nearly 50,000 travellers have gone onto use the technology over the first year. Having seen the results, CNN is looking to extend the services into other airport locations, and even hotels.
Joerg Buddenberg, Marketing Manager for CNN Germany said “we are delighted we have found this innovative and totally accountable method for recruiting subscribers. CNN Mobile is one of our platforms for growth over the next few years, and this is proving to be a successful way to recruit users.”
Charlie Hugill, Strategic Planning Director for PSI Advertising, the world’s leading airport planning and buying agency, commenting on these results, said “We are watching this project unfold with keen interest. We believe it is the start of the rollout of these types of services across airports worldwide. Our clients are telling us they want to make out-of-home media more measurable, and by linking the advertising with a mobile call to action, a direct and accountable connection between media investment and outcome becomes a reality”.
